RAL Weekend – Huge Success!

Another RAL has come and gone, and the excellent members of the region have once again pulled together to raise a PILE of money to help fight Leukemia! The total raised (as of August 13th) is over $20,500! That is almost identical to last year, and is due to the hard work of many folks within our group who worked hard to make sure everything ran smoothly and happened on time this past weekend!

The weekend actually started one week earlier, with some members holding a “Karting against Leukemia” fundraiser at On-Track Karting in Wallingford, CT. They solicited donations for the RAL cause, and were able to raised $561 to donate to the fund at RAL! Thanks go to the Kennedy family/Team Swift Racing for kicking us off early and strongly!

The biggest challenge of all for the weekend may have been for our RallyCross group, who up until a week before the RAL event, had NO SITE for the RallyCross Against Leukemia event! The RallyX folks worked tirelessly to secure a completely new site in Caanan, NH, and which yielded an excellent event on Sunday, with a combination of tarmac, dirt and gravel! Congratulations to that group for that achievement.

Club Racing held a Triple Points event this weekend, in addition to holding two special events this year: This was the second year of the “Really RAL” race, with all proceeds of the entry fees for the race going directly to RAL, and the Club Racing Experience, which was a resounding success. This was the first time NER had run this event, which was designed to get people with HDPE or track-day appropriate cars, which could meet an amended set of safety rules, running on the road course of NHMS with real wheel-to-wheel and passing experiences. The event is meant to garner interest from folks as to why we have one of the best racing experiences available in the entire country, and why they should become part of the Club Racing Group with NER.

The Rally Against Leukemia road rally went quite well again this year, starting at the gates of NHMS on Saturday afternoon, and returning to hold their final stage on the road course around NHMS in the DARK. There were some close battles amongst experienced and novice competitors, and even participation by an antique vehicle from 1931!

Solo held their annual Racing against Leukemia charity runs on Saturday morning, and then their Jeff Gordon and Bill Goodale challenge events in the afternoon for fastest open-class and novice-class participants. Kim-Soo Gopnik, daughter of Chang-Ho Kim and Melissa Gopnik, schooled all the big-car drivers during the afternoon runs, and was the last girl standing at the end of the challenge runs, taking the overall win in the open class for the Jeff Gordon trophy! Kathy Barnes presented Kim-Soo with her trophy on the official NHMS winner’s circle podium along with all the Club Racing winners at the end of Saturday’s racing!

Track tours were held on the road course of NHMS again this year, and proved to be a great success yet again, with 24 vehicles of various kinds taking to the track for the “guided tour.” This 15-20 minute event is always a great way to get onto the road course in a comfortable vehicle with air conditioning and just enjoy the view usually seen at 100mph and with other folks trying to beat you into the next corner or passing zone!

Of course, half of the reason to come for RAL is for the party and socializing, and the spectacle this year reinforced that you NEED to attend next year just to see what happens next. The party this year included excellent pulled pork sandwiches, potato salad, Cole Slaw, beer custom-brewed for our event, and plenty of snacks on hand. The raffle went off well thanks to the special announcing duty of Nick Leverone, who was there representing both himself and the “Chief planner of RAL,” Jody Leverone, who is eagerly awaiting the birth of their first child. Danielle Moehring and her father, Manfred, who are the reason RAL was started in the first place, came back to speak to us again and to remind us why this event is important. Danielle was diagnosed with Leukemia when she was very young, and her father first organized this event to benefit the (then very small) foundation that was helping young children deal with Leukemia. It’s great to have faces to put to the names of the founders of this event, and it’s always great to have them with us at this event!

I’m sure people were wondering who was getting shaved this year after the raffle, as it was expected that the tradition started 2 years ago of shaving a member with a long full beard/mustache would get shaved if the party attendees were able to raise enough money. Last year, our Emeritus Club Racing Chair Jerry Rigoli lost his beard and mustache for around $1500. This year, our Area Director and IT7 particpiant, Dick Patullo, upped the stakes considerably, with a promise that if we could raise $4000 in honor of his friend “SuperMax”, he would let us shave him bald. His smug look turned serious when the amount raised reached $3000, and with people running back to their cars and trailers for checkbooks and money, we raised $4120. A man of his word, with drinks firmly in both hands, he let anyone in the garage take their turn shaving off beard, mustache and head hair. I personally got to complete the smooth look on his head and cheeks with my straight-razor, and I have to thank Dick for his trust in me to not butcher him. I promise I hadn’t had more than three beers. Who knows what we’ll have to dream up next year to beat this excellent fund-raising prowess!

Saturday night ended with a showing of the movie “1”, about Formula One racing, and various folks wandered back to “Dino City” or “Solo/Rally City” to bench race and pass the comfortable night away with more beverages and laughter. Sunday was back to racing for everyone, and then the clean-up and tow-out for those with long trips home.

Thank you to everyone who made RAL possible this year. You are all the reason we are able to give back like we do to charity, and to have our most social and fun event of the year. See you all in 2015!

Club Racing Experience

New England Region SCCA announces its Club Racing Experience (CRE) event at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday August 10th try your hand at wheel to wheel racing.

Who can race in this CRE event?Participation is open to any SCCA regular or weekend member. No license or doctor’s physical is required. Members must possess and are responsible for recording participation in a SCCA Racing Experience Participation Log. Logs will be issued by SCCA Stewards or Registrars at the event. Participants must certify they have no known medical conditions that would cause them or others undue risk.

People who may want to race in CRE include:

  • Drivers that compete in other sanctioning body events, but have not tried SCCA
  • Vintage drivers
  • Non-SCCA licensed drivers that want to compete one or two times a year in a more controlled environment
  • Current Solo, PDX and Club Trials drivers looking for the next step
  • Novice drivers trying to gain more track time
  • Opportunity for current drivers to reward support and crew members
  • Experienced drivers trying a new car or considering a purchase

What do I need for a car?Vehicles are intended to be production based vehicles with a performance level equal or less than normal in Club Racing classes Spec Miata or Improved Touring A. Spec Racer Fords may also participate. For the most part cars need to meet SCCA Club Racing safety standard although they do not need to be legal for any particular class. The cars do not need to have a SCCA logbook but will have to be inspected to make sure they meet minimum safety standards.

What do I need for personal safety gear?Helmet, driver’s suit and other personal safety gear requirements are the same as club racing except head and neck devices are recommended not required. Everything you need to run this event could be borrowed or rented.

What makes this different from a traditional club racing event? The CRE event is designed to be a lower risk, less aggressive form of wheel to wheel racing. Because we expect most participants will be new to wheel to wheel racing there will be mandatory classroom sessions where you will learn the rules, racecraft and what to expect during the day. The event will have a chief instructor and a separate chief steward who will work with you to set expectations and make this a fun experience. The rules of the road are what are commonly called 13/13 in some organizations. This means if you have an at fault incident you will be counseled to be more careful and if you have a second you will likely be asked to park the car. If you go off during a session you may be directed to stop in the pit lane to chat with the instructor to make sure everything is okay. The entire idea is to have fun and take front-and-center part in this very exciting sport.

How much does this cost and what do I get for it?The NER CRE event costs $250. For that you get one very long fun day. The entire event runs in one day with multiple classroom session and 4 sessions on track. This will likely be 2 practice sessions and 2 races intersperse between our regular club racing sessions.

Okay I want to do this, what do I do next?Well beg, borrow or rent a car. Beg, borrow or rent helmet, suit and other personal safety gear and then sign up for the event on MotorsportReg. Registration normally opens about three weeks before the event. All paper work you need to sign including regular or weekend memberships will be available when you get to the track. Don’t forget to check out the Event Schedule and Supplementary Regulations, and tell your friends what you’ll be up to on Facebook!

See, wasn’t that easy?

Publicity & Marketing 2014

By Trevor Alexander Hermance – E-mail – Call/Text: 860-986-9613Hey all,Here’s a heads up on what we’ll be doing on the marketing and publicity fronts during the “offseason” (not much of one with our pavement-indifferent rally programs!):January 10-12, 2014
26th Annual Northeast Motorsports Expo and Trade Show

Augusta Civic Center, ME
The 26th Annual Expo will gather race tracks, sanctioning bodies, and fans for a chance to jumpstart the 2014 season with the latest news, products, and socializing opportunities! A fun pit crew competition is planned for Friday night. Display cars are needed and help representing our sports car lifestyle is always appreciated! If you’re able to volunteer, let me know; if not, at least consider stopping by on the weekend to hang out while we give the SCCA some recognition in the northeasternmost state. And if it’s too far north for you, then you should instead check out our season-opening event, the great two-day Stafford Springs RallyCross in CT!

February 7-8, 2014
The Racers Expo

Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel, Marlborough, MA

This year the club’s Annual Meeting is held symbiotically with The Race Depot’s Bob Seymour’s annual Racers Expo. Like the other shows, this is a gathering of teams, tracks, and touring series with vendors that will benefit from more sports car involvement. The show runs two days and we’ll have a booth, but in addition there will be space reserved for NER which we’ll use to expose club racing, solo, and rally to a lot of the fans and predominantly oval-racing-centric participants there. The space will also be for our annual business meeting Saturday afternoon and “breakout rooms” where the programs can flesh out plans for the coming year. And on the evening of the 8th, the popular NER Awards Banquet will be held where we get to congratulate (with friends, family and fans) the winners of championships and regional awards from 2012. This will also be the awards ceremony for the 2013 North Atlantic Road Racing Championships. Let us know in the forums if you would like to volunteer for the show hours!

February 21-22, 2014
Racin’ Preview

Portland Exposition Building, ME

New for 2014, NER will also be present at the second show held by promoter Steve Perry in Maine, the Racin’ Expo! Right in the middle of downtown Portland, this event should have a big audience. Get in touch if you can display your car from late Friday morning through Saturday night.

March 1-2, 2014
The 55th Annual Frank Maratta’s Auto & Cycle “Show of Dreams” and Motorsports Expo/Race-a-Rama Presented by Town Fair Tire

Eastern States Exposition Fairgrounds Better Living Center, West Springfield, MA

This show has a long history in Connecticut but has moved to the Big E site, of Race-a-Rama fame! The event organizer (which has hosted NER venues Lime Rock Park and New Hampshire Motor Speedway as exhibitors for some years) continues to expand the racing side of its activities. We’re forming a squad of SCCA members to get our name out there – and have some fun in a racing environment while we’re at it! The biggest feature of this is its always impressive collection of highly customized classic cars, trucks, and motorcycles. We’re looking for help. Let us know if you would be able to park your car in a booth for the weekend and help out! Want to see cars that are actually moving? Then head to New Hampshire for our Frost Heaves Road Rally on Saturday and/or our Slip-n-Slide RallyCross on Sunday!

2014 Big School Car Shows

Formula SAE Formula Hybrid at NHMS
Loudon, NH

Formula Hybrid is one of several events not sanctioned by NER that we nonetheless have a large hand in conducting with our experienced and professionally-skilled volunteer base. Post in the forum if you will be able to support this event which trains the upcoming automotive engineers of the United States, and provides us a good opportunity to grow our participant base!

June 8, 2014
Wicked Big Meet Presented By Subaru of New England
Stafford Motor Speedway, Stafford Springs, CT

NER will again have a presence at the annual Wicked Big Meet, with some members’ cars in booths and representation roaming the grounds.

August 3, 2014
RST Performance Racing vists Concord Home Depot

Visit one of NER’s most dedicated and friendly racing families with their cars in New Hampshire! The Blethens and Dugans will have their stable of Mazda RX-8s, BMWs, and potentially even Audis and Porsches on display to hype our annual Racing Against Leukemia event that will follow the next weekend. Hang out and talk shop, get the kids some photos with the cars, snag some free stuff and help recruit and excite some new people for our signature event!

Other events will be coming down the pipeline as well. For all of these, you too can have your competition machine on hand for the adoring fans to fawn over and take photos of, and you get to hand out stickers, PitTalk magazines, schedules and information to prospective new members who can net you SCCA credit. It’s fun to get out there and help inspire people and is easier than you think; plus, it’s another event to do for FREE! We need help for all of these, it’ll keep the club going.
